The Odyssey: an epic adventure

This is a special invitation to join Dr Martin Shaw for a weekend telling of Homer’s The Odyssey in celebration of 20 years of the School of Myth.

“Tell me, Muse, of the man of many ways, who was driven far journeys, after he had sacked Troy’s secret citadel. Many were they whose cities he saw, whose minds he learned of, many the pains he suffered on his spirit on the wide sea, struggling for his own life and the homecoming of his companions. Even so he could not save his companions, hard though he strove to; they were destroyed by their own wild recklessness, fools, who devoured the oxen of Helios, the Sun God, and he took away the day of their homecoming. 

“From some point here, goddess, daughter of Zeus, speak, and begin our story.”

Martin says: “To celebrate 20 years of the School of Myth, it’s only fitting to dig into something properly, truly, magnificent: Homer’s Odyssey. The big one. Very few of you will ever have heard me tell it – I have to disappear under my cloak for several weeks even to begin the approach of invoking it. Filled with twists and turns, wily and beautiful characters, it’s truly bloody unforgettable.

“I’m hoping you’ll have a rush to the head and join us for the deep genius of this story and also clink a glass with shipmates both old and new as we set sail on a new adventure. Do not delay if you feel the call, as places will go fast.”

PRACTICAL DETAILS:

This is a residential course on the edge of Dartmoor, taking place at an old manor house near Bovey Tracey. If fully booked, the group size will be 60. The fee includes all teaching, accommodation, evening meals on Friday and Saturday and simple buffet breakfasts. Our Dartmoor venue is an old manor house near Bovey Tracey,

Twin or triple room:  sharing a room with one (or two) others: £504 (£420+VAT)

Standard shared room: sharing with up to 6 others (single sex): £456 (£380+VAT)

Budget bunk bed: a bunk bed in a standard shared room: £420 (£350+VAT)
